Kennel cough can be caused by one or a combination of the following airborne agents (either as the causative or secondary agent): canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus 2, canine parainfluenza virus, the bordetella bronchiseptica or other gram negative bacteria. The condition is triggered when two or more of these pathogens attack the dog at the same time, leading to bronchial and tracheal inflammation. Other signs of kennel cough include thick yellow or green nasal discharge, rhinitis and conjunctivitis in some dogs.

The labor period of dogs usually lasts only a few hours, and usually the owner will become conscious of its existence only after some of the puppies have been born. The puppies are born with their eyes closed, which is normal. The eyes open when the pup is ten to twelve days old. The average healthy animal not only will give birth without any difficulty, but will maintain its offspring for the five to sixweek nursing period with very creditable neatness and assurance. The owner should assist in making the weaning period gradual. Toward the end of the third or at the beginning of the fourth week, the owner should start to teach the puppies to take milk from a dish. This will lighten the load on the mother dog and will assist in helping the puppy to make its adaptation to artificial feeding when it is finally separated from its mother after five or six weeks.

Aggressive dogs are the ideal patient for injectable vaccination, particularly if they are the type that bites when their muzzle is handled. Owners should remember that this treatment will not prevent kennel cough 100%, but will make infection less severe.

Although paralysis in dogs may occur in the jaws, forelegs, or in groups of muscles in other parts of the body, the most common manifestations are in the hind legs. Paralysis of the hind legs is known as posterior paralysis. The attack may be rather mild, in which case it is often transitory in nature and is readily amenable to routine treatment. Conversely, the attack may be rather severe, in which case it may be entirely resistant to the entire gamut of medical alternatives. Posterior paralysis is ordinarily caused by pressure, injury, or degeneration of the nerves or the part of the spinal cord that are associated with the proper functioning of the hind limbs. Thus the condition may come about as a result of a back injury, a spinal growth, or an intestinal obstruction. Also it may result from obscure nervous diseases, senility, a heavy tick infestation, or from certain infectious diseases such as distemper.

Healthy dogs can easily acquire the disease in vaccination clinics, animal shelters, veterinary hospitals, local parks, kennels, dog shows, grooming parlors or animal boarding places with infected dogs. Crowded situations where the air is very warm and ventilation is poor are a potential source of kennel cough.
