Dog owners often raise the question of the egg requirements for their dogs, mentioning that they have heard somewhere that the feeding of eggs will encourage a glossy coat. This belief is incorrect. Vigorous dogs that are properly cleaned and groomed will have glossy coats whether or not they have ever been fed eggs. Unhealthy dogs, or those that are improperly cleaned or groomed, will not have a good, shiny coat no matter how often eggs are fed. Eggs, however, are a perfectly wholesome food for dogs and are an excellent source of protein. But, since meat and milk are equally rich in this nutrient and are generally cheaper, eggs are usually considered to be a good, though uneconomical, supplementary food for dogs.

In warm climates or warm seasons, the heating pad or hotwater bag will be of only questionable benefit because it may make the animal uncomfortable. In such cases it would probably be better to feed the animal a tidbit every time it is placed in the bed. In this way the animal will quickly learn to associate pleasantness with its bed.

In recent years a new sedative drug has been developed which seems to work quite well in a large percentage of these cases. It comes in tablet form and is called dramamine. The animal should be given the proper dose before taking it for a drive. Dog owners whose pets are afflicted with carsickness are advised to contact their veterinarian to inquire about this drug and its use. Dramamine can be purchased at most pharmacies on a veterinarian’s prescription. Bonamine is another drug that has achieved popularity. Many of the newer forms of tranquillizers are also very effective against carsickness.

Whether we speak of veterinary medicine or of human medicine, the fact remains that anatomy is the foundation stone upon which the entire edifice of modern medicine is built. Disease is essentially an impairment of the function of a particular organ. Without an understanding of the anatomy of the organ, scientific treatment is impossible. Thus anatomy is of crucial importance to the veterinarian. As a dog owner, you can have the complete assurance that your veterinarian has profound anatomical knowledge that he uses all the time in his efforts to keep your dog healthy.

Repeated sharp reprimands of “No, No” are usually quite sufficient to condition the dog not to bark in certain situations, such as when the telephone rings or in the back yard for no reason. The more stubborn dog may be muzzled whenever it barks excessively. When the muzzle is removed, it is placed in full view of the dog. Soon the animal cuts down on the barking because it associates the muzzle with restraint and discomfort. However, the procedure is recommended only as a last resort in the very worst cases, since some trainers are of the opinion that it involves a certain amount of cruelty. Other trainers teach the animal the meaning of the word “Quiet,” with the assistance of a piece of folded newspaper with which they slap the animal’s haunches whenever it barks excessively. The desirability of this method is also questionable.

Whether meat is fed cooked or raw depends both on convenience to the owner and on the preference of the animal. It will make no difference, however, to the health of the dog which way the food is fed.
