Constant scratching, tail-chasing, coughing and wheezing, eye and nose discharges – if these symptoms can be observed on your pet dog, chances are very likely that he/she is suffering from allergies.
Before you buy a puppy, several factors must be taken into consideration. The size of your living quarters and the freedom that your dog will enjoy should be taken into account in selecting a breed. If you are a home owner and have a large back yard where your dog can have unlimited exercise, then the matter of breed presents no special problem. If you are confined to a small, city apartment, then it would be advisable to limit yourself to a breed of dog no larger than a Cocker Spaniel or a Fox Terrier. It is always wiser to select a purebred dog than a mongrel, because with a purebred you can have a specific idea of how your pet will look upon maturity, while, with a mongrel, you can never be sure.
Another technique is to use a muzzle. The muzzle is put on whenever the dog barks or whines upon the owner’s leaving. This can be repeated until the proper degree of quiet is obtained. Some trainers consider this method cruel and therefore it is not routinely recommended except in the case of extremely stubborn dogs. In any case, the conscientious owner who uses the more humane method outlined above will ordinarily have no difficulty.

Tumors are classified as malignant, in which case they are diseaseproducing, and benign, in which case they are not diseaseproducing. Malignant tumors are often accompanied by a gradual wasting away of the body. Portions of them may become disconnected from the tumor, be transported by the circulatory system to other parts of the body, and form new centers of development. Malignant tumors commonly terminate in death. The term “cancer” is applied to malignant tumors. Benign tumors are purely local in character, are not transported to other parts of the body, and generally do not affect the animal’s health. Though benign tumors are not diseaseproducing in themselves, they may contribute to the development of disease conditions because of the locations in which they may appear. Thus a benign tumor of the throat may give rise to symptoms of suffocation. In the abdominal cavity they may pave the way for digestive disorders and other pathological processes. In the limbs they may give rise to lameness.

In any case these two forms of diabetes can be distinguished by urine analysis since sugar is present in the mellitus form and absent in the insipidus form. Both these forms can be distinguished from simple abundant urination resulting from drinking too much water. In the latter instance, if the water intake is controlled, the abundant urinations (polyuria) cease.

The idea behind this system of reward and punishment is that it seems to be the innate desire of the dog to please the master—to win his approval and to avoid his disapproval. If the master appreciates this fact, training rarely presents any special problem. All he essentially has to do is to approve those actions that he wants the dog to perform and to disapprove those actions he does not want the dog to
