The mere presence of such overwhelming numbers of old dogs supplied the interest, the opportunity, and the necessity for the systematic study of the diseases of old age. Though geriatrics is still in its infancy, its achievements have already been noteworthy and it continues in everwidening measure to contribute to our understanding of the diseases of old age, with its consequent prolongation of the life of our favorite pet, the dog. In this regard, veterinary science owes an inestimable debt to human medical research.
Diabetes mellitus is caused essentially by some disturbance in the pancreas in which the organ loses its ability to secrete a substance called insulin, thereby disrupting the whole sugar metabolism. The cause of diabetes insipidus is much more uncertain. It has been observed during the convalescence of certain infectious diseases; it may be associated with certain diseases of the nervous system; it may sometimes result from a cold, liver or spinal damage, certain irritant medicine, or from infection.
In some cases, veterinarians may advise pre-anesthesia blood work, or an overall health check to determine if the dog’s kidneys and other internal organs are functioning properly and if blood count is normal. The process will also help establish any potential risk before anesthesia is applied.
