More than 50% of dogs that acquire the disease die from canine distemper. An even lower 20% survival rate is present for puppies. And even if the dog survives the disease, it is very likely that its health will be permanently damaged.
In most darkhaired dogs, gray hairs appear under the lips and around the nose. Also the muzzle becomes enlarged. In old age the hair becomes quite gray in the region of the eyes and extending to the forehead. The ends of the digits become enlarged and rounded, the claws become elongated and very curved; and in animals that have a chronic eczema, the skin of the back and loins shows partial loss of hair, a general thickening, and wartiness.
NIACIN OR NICOTINIC ACID: Deficiencies of this vitamin will result in a disease of dogs called black tongue. This disease is related to pellagra in humans, from which a synonymous term for niacin deficiency has been coined: the Pellagra Preventive Factor. Deficiencies of this vitamin are extremely rare in ordinary household dogs since commercial dog foods and meat have more than enough of this vitamin to meet the dog’s needs. This is a problem found only in areas of extreme poverty.

Although not all vomiting and bloody diarrhea is caused by parvovirus, it would still pay to take a trip to the veterinarian for a check up. The only way to verify whether a dog has parvovirus or not is clinical and laboratory diagnosis. It would be better to err on the side of safety on this matter. If you think your dog has the parvovirus, a quick trip to the veterinarian won¡¯t be in vain. To treat the disease, a veterinarian will most likely recommend supportive therapy. This will involve replacing the fluids lost due to diarrhea and vomiting. This will probably be an electrolyte solution administered intravenously. In less severe cases, oral solutions will suffice. Antibiotics may be given to control secondary infections. Medicines to control vomiting may also be given.

Heart ailments are fairly common in older dogs. They may occur independently, but will be noted most often in asthmatic animals. The only symptom of which the pet owner may be aware is an occasional fainting spell. Diagnosis is often extremely subtle and difficult, and treatment is usually based on the effort to strengthen heart action and to retard any degenerative process. Here again, the owner should be reminded that since asthma and heart trouble often come together in older dogs, a fainting spell should always be given proper consideration. Also, since the signs of asthma are so much more apparent than those of heart trouble, and since asthma can actually cause certain heart ailments, any cough in old dogs should be looked upon as a serious symptom.
