Dental pet care experts say that up to 80% of dogs manifest signs of dental diseases by three years in the absence of proper oral hygiene. Getting dogs accustomed to dental care as early as possible is crucial to ensuring their long-term health. With regular check-ups, cases such as bad bite or malocclusion, gingival irritation, deciduous teeth and tartar formation can be spotted earlier. This will prevent the situation from worsening and help save the dog’s teeth.

The tonsils are rodlike structures which lie in small grooves on either side of the back of the mouth. An inflammation of these structures is called tonsillitis. The inflammation may be either acute or chronic. The acute form responds readily to simple medical treatment. The chronic form is often resistant to medical treatment, and requires surgical removal of the tonsils for the permanent elimination of the condition. Tonsillitis does not appear too frequently in dogs, though the Boston Terrier seems to have a special predilection for it.

Old age is specifically characterized by the appearance of gray hair under the lips and around the nose, with gradual extension to the region of the eyes and to the forehead. The ends of the digits become enlarged and the claws have a tendency to become curved and elongated. Often the muzzle also becomes enlarged. In some animals, especially those that are affected with a chronic skin irritation of the back and loins, there may be a partial loss of hair and a general thickening of the skin in the diseased area. The appearance of warts is quite common in many breeds. As a dog gets older, the color of the pupil of the normal eye seems to change gradually from deep blue to whitish. Some dogs have a tendency to increase somewhat in weight, but most often there is a gradual loss of weight and dehydration of the tissues of the body. That there is a gradual though obvious loss of vigor goes almost without saying.

From the standpoint of the dog’s natural inheritance and physical attributes, its exercise requirements would seem to be prodigious. When sporting or working dogs are on the job, they may run as many as fifty to a hundred miles a day almost effortlessly, and they would seem to require fifteen to twenty miles of daily exercise solely to keep their muscles in a proper state of vigor. Even the terriers and nonsporting varieties seem to need four to five miles of exercise just to warm up. Only the toy breeds present no exercise problem; these little animals usually can get all they need under ordinary conditions.

In the summer time, the areas between the toes should be checked for ticks, which commonly attach themselves to this area. (This seems somehow natural since the dog will often step into a place where ticks happen to be, and the foot is, after all, the most convenient spot where the tick can take hold.) Many general ailments can occur on the feet, especially a variety of irritations. In such cases, the feet should be kept especially clean and also swabbed with ordinary household antiseptics, such as tincture of iodine. If the irritation does not heal or at least improve in a very few days, it is advisable to have it checked by a veterinarian in order to avoid any serious complications. The nails should be trimmed whenever necessary. They should not extend further than the foot pads. When the nails are too long, they cause pressure and discomfort.

Toys are a fun way to enjoy with your dog in a sunny day at the park. But be sure to apply proper safety measures especially when playing with balls, sticks and stones. You do not want to harm them in any way. Remember, this is a dog-eat-dog world! Even as harmless as playing can cause indestructible damage to your dog.
