It is obvious that if a dog is never permitted on the street without a leash, the problem of carchasing will not arise. However, assuming that this is not a practicable procedure and that the animal is in the habit of chasing cars, how is the habit to be broken? Here is a routine method suggested by trainers. Stand on the sidewalk or lawn with your dog and have a friend drive a car past you. Hold a small, light piece of chain in your hand. As the animal rushes at the car, throw the chain at its hind legs. Repeat the procedure several times. The dog’s mind does not realize that you threw the chain. It comes to associate the blow from the chain with the passing car, and feels that somehow it has been attacked by the car. Repeated performance of this procedure sooner or later will break the animal of the carchasing habit.
Immunity means that there is little or no risk of falling ill to a certain disease. In adult dogs immunity can result from either vaccination or the dog suffering and survived the disease. Vaccination stimulates the dog’s immune system to produce its disease-fighting cells and proteins or what is known as antibodies to protect against diseases. Regular and repeated vaccinations are required. There are vaccination schedules for certain types of diseases for puppies and adult dogs.
The main purpose of treating infected dogs is to kill both offspring and adult worms using a microfilaricide and adulticide respectively. A crucial condition of treatment: minimizing any adverse side effect due to the drugs used and a tolerable level of complications due to the dying heartworms. Dogs without or with mild signs have shown significant success following treatment, while those exhibiting more severe signs also have successful treatment, but are more prone to complications and death.

The most common serious injuries involve hemorrhage, bone dislocations or fractures and internal injuries. Where there is serious external hemorrhage, and a veterinarian is not immediately available, some effort must be made to stop it. This can be done by wrapping some gauze around the wound, covering this with a liberal amount of absorbent cotton, and bandaging snugly. Then wrap the animal in a warm blanket and contact a veterinarian.

In addition, a good number of veterinarians feel that no treatment may actually be the best course of action, as antibiotics could later weaken a dog’s resistance and increase exposure to pneumonia and other more serious complications.

A dog is altered or spayed to eliminate the breeding function and its accompanying inconveniences, thereby making the animal a more amenable household pet. Altering is the term generally applied to the process performed on male animals, while spaying is applied to the female operation. Spaying and altering are performed for the convenience of the owner. These operations have no bearing on the wellbeing of the normal animal, and generally do not drastically affect its basic personality traits, though altered animals are inclined to become heavier and more sluggish than unaltered ones. Females also occasionally get heavier following the operation. Altering and spaying are the commonest surgical operations that the smallanimal veterinary specialist is called upon to perform. They have a wide margin of safety and few veterinarians report higher than two per cent of fatalities.
