In regard to routine animal dentistry, the favorable result of a thorough dental treatment is immediate and sensational in most cases. The odor quickly disappears from the dog’s mouth, the toxic substances are readily eliminated, and the reinvigorated animal gallivants in a manner reminiscent of its puppyhood days.
The labor period of dogs usually lasts only a few hours, and usually the owner will become conscious of its existence only after some of the puppies have been born. The puppies are born with their eyes closed, which is normal. The eyes open when the pup is ten to twelve days old. The average healthy animal not only will give birth without any difficulty, but will maintain its offspring for the five to sixweek nursing period with very creditable neatness and assurance. The owner should assist in making the weaning period gradual. Toward the end of the third or at the beginning of the fourth week, the owner should start to teach the puppies to take milk from a dish. This will lighten the load on the mother dog and will assist in helping the puppy to make its adaptation to artificial feeding when it is finally separated from its mother after five or six weeks.
A flea bath is the first step to a parasite-free pet. Be careful in using a flea shampoo because most products are too harsh on puppies. Consult your veterinarian on what to use if your puppy has fleas. It can also relieve irritation and itching. Don’t stop at shampooing because it doesn’t really protect your dog after getting a bath. One alternative is using flea dips that keep fleas at bay for some time after dipping, but it is not recommended by most veterinarians. The downside is that your dog might eat or swallow these parasites after licking, since a flea dip stays on the dog’s hair coat. Another option is a flea collar. It will only kill all the fleas in the dog’s neck and face – not the whole body. Some also dogs develop a rash when using flea collars. While flea medallions can contaminate the dog’s drinking water, since it hangs loose from the collar.

The area around which the abscess breaks may be only slightly swollen or it may be so enlarged that the face has a distorted aspect. Most often the swelling is only slight. A discharge that may be bloody or pussy flows from the opening of the abscess. This may become dried and scabby. If routine antiseptics are applied to the affected area, the wound may heal. But this healing is only temporary, for in time the sore opens up again and gives rise to more discharge. This condition may occur on one or both sides of the face, depending on whether one or both carnassial teeth are infected. The whole picture of this condition is so characteristic that once it is seen it is rarely forgotten.
