Dogs grow to various sizes. The Irish wolfhound, for example, stands about 32 inches high at the withers, or top of the shoulders. The Chihuahua, however, stands about five inches.
Jumping on people is a habit in the dog. The best procedure is never to permit the animal to acquire it. When the animal approaches you, you bend down to pet the animal rather than wait for it to hop up to your hand to receive petting. If an animal should want to jump on you anyway, gently hold the dog on the ground by the collar and say, “No, No.” If the owner is persistent in this procedure, and all those who meet or live with the pet are instructed to act the same way, the animal will probably never acquire the habit of jumping on people. If there is a situation where the habit is rather firmly entrenched, many trainers have suggested that the easiest way to break it is to get hold of the pet’s front paws when it jumps on you, and to step lightly on its hind feet, making sure not to injure them. With such a routine, the jumping habit ordinarily is broken in no time at all. Another technique, which is simpler and probably even more effective, is to thrust your knee against the animal’s chest vigorously whenever it attempts to jump on you.
An animal is said to be constipated when the bowel movements are either infrequent or incomplete or when the stool is more or less retained in the intestines. In this condition a large part of the moisture of the stool is often absorbed into the body and the stool comes out gray to whitish in color. In itself constipation is not a serious condition, for it can usually be remedied quite readily by administering a simple laxative such as milk of magnesia or mineral oil, or by giving an enema or using a children’s size suppository. But where it is neglected it can cause serious complications which might even result in the death of the animal. While there are many possible causes of constipation, it is most commonly due to lack of exercise, which results in a general sluggishness of all the body functions.

The teeth of dogs are not subject to dental caries, that is, to cavities, so that the veterinarian is not called upon to fill teeth. There are, however, numerous cases on record of false teeth having been prepared for dogs. This is not a routine practice because it is economically unfeasible and because false teeth in dogs are not physiologically necessary. The function of the teeth in dogs is mainly to tear food, not to chew it. The digestive system of these animals is such as to render chewing unnecessary to all practical purposes. Therefore, if a dog has no teeth at all, the owner merely has to cut up the food into small pieces, and this accomplishes the main task of the teeth. If this is done, the toothless dog will thrive quite well. Thus the dental plate is an unessential ostentation.

An allergy injection, also called immunotherapy, is a series of treatments meant to produce immunity to substances your dog is currently allergic to. Skin and blood testing is performed to find out what substances causes your pet’s allergies. These substances then are given to your dog in small but increasing amounts via injections. Over a period of time, the dog becomes desensitized to the substances and no longer exhibits allergic reactions to them.
