Possibly the most common area of degeneration in old dogs is the kidney. It is safe to say that the large majority of old dogs that live out their natural lives die ultimately of some form of kidney degeneration.
Though the manifestations usually occur in one gland, both glands may be involved. In the acute form, the affected gland quickly develops a painful swelling that extends to the surrounding tissues. Where infection has been the cause, abscesses develop in the gland. If one gland is involved, the animal holds its head away from the affected side. When both glands are involved, the head is held extended. There is fever, depression, and impaired appetite. Streams of saliva may run out of the corners of the mouth.
Corticosteroids are also a useful for controlling allergies by reducing the inflammation in your dog’s skin. Although it will weaken the immune system a bit, it is often necessary in order to treat the allergy. Some side effects are increased appetite and drinking, and higher chances of developing infections. It is therefore not recommended for long-term use. If a longer duration of use is necessary, your pet has to have regular check up on his/her blood and urine.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is essential to the preservation of muscles and is reputed to improve reproductivity in animals. It is present in liver, lettuce, and especially in wheat germ oil. It is well to mention that codliver oil may destroy the vitamin E in the dog. Thus large doses of codliver oil should be judiciously avoided.

The area around which the abscess breaks may be only slightly swollen or it may be so enlarged that the face has a distorted aspect. Most often the swelling is only slight. A discharge that may be bloody or pussy flows from the opening of the abscess. This may become dried and scabby. If routine antiseptics are applied to the affected area, the wound may heal. But this healing is only temporary, for in time the sore opens up again and gives rise to more discharge. This condition may occur on one or both sides of the face, depending on whether one or both carnassial teeth are infected. The whole picture of this condition is so characteristic that once it is seen it is rarely forgotten.

Most newly acquired puppies are not housebroken. When the animal is first brought into the home it should therefore be taken to a room such as the kitchen where it can do the least amount of damage. Several thicknesses of newspaper should be spread on the floor, and the animal should be left to its own resources for a while.
