Leptospirosis is a contagious disease that affects animals as well as humans. Caused by a group of organisms called lepterospira interrogans (within such species there are different strains), the disease can lead to chronic liver and kidney disease and even death in dogs. Eight of the different strains give off different types and levels of disease which depends upon the animal that they infect. The disease causes more problems in dogs. Not until recently, the vaccines that were available are only for two types of bacteria namely, Leptospirosis canicola and L. icterhaemorrhagiae, has virtually wiped out the clinical ailment associated with these strains between the immunized dog population. Vaccines for two other additional types of bacteria, L. grippotyphosa and L. Pomona are now readily available.
It has often been erroneously suggested that it is not advisable to bathe puppies before they are four to six months old. If human infants can be bathed soon after birth, then does it not seem foolish to believe that to bathe a puppy—relatively so much stronger than a human infant—is dangerous? This belief seems based on the mistaken notion that puppies that are bathed when they are too young will get distemper. The fact is that if a puppy is improperly dried after a bath, and is permitted to go out into the cold air, it might catch a cold and thus be more readily susceptible to distemper. However, if the animal is completely dry before being permitted outside, no harm will ever come of a bath regardless of the age of the animal. It is often even advisable, and sometimes necessary, to bathe a very young puppy, especially if it is very filthy or laden with fleas. It is thus perfectly safe to bathe a dog, regardless of age, provided that the simplest commonsense precautions are taken. And the essential one is that the animal must be thoroughly dry before being exposed to the open air.
Growth and reproduction may also be adversely affected by a vitamin A deficiency, and it is occasionally a cause of sterility in dogs. Growth of the ear bones may also be impaired. Deafness can sometimes be traced to this deficiency. Tooth and gum involvements, and a tendency to the formation of kidney and bladder stones, may also be occasioned by a lack of this vitamin.

Dogs is a major status symbol in American pet-keeping. Every year, over 12 billion dollars have been spent on dog food and veterinary care alone. According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association’s 2003-2004 Pet Owners’ Survey, more than half of dog owners purchase toys for their dogs.

At four years the cusps on the upper pincers disappear and the intermediates start to flatten out. The teeth begin to get yellow, and tartar deposits are often observed at the base of the canines. At five years the incisors are markedly worn. The wearing of the teeth might, however, be advanced or retarded in proportion to the care and nourishment the dog has received.

Though the manifestations usually occur in one gland, both glands may be involved. In the acute form, the affected gland quickly develops a painful swelling that extends to the surrounding tissues. Where infection has been the cause, abscesses develop in the gland. If one gland is involved, the animal holds its head away from the affected side. When both glands are involved, the head is held extended. There is fever, depression, and impaired appetite. Streams of saliva may run out of the corners of the mouth.
