Even the most competent specialist in canine diseases often finds it difficult to establish clinical diagnoses of the ailments of the heart. It is apparent, therefore, that any detailed description of heart diseases would be of little value to the general reader. However, the intelligent person in the modern world should have some idea of what some of the terms associated with heart diseases signify, since they are so commonly mentioned in everyday conversation. The heart is covered by a double membrane which forms a sac around it. This membrane is called the pericardium, and the sac is called the pericardial cavity. An inflammation of the pericardium is called pericarditis. Where a watery fluid accumulates in the pericardial cavity as a result of some inflammatory process, the condition is called hydropericardium. When blood accumulates in the pericardial cavity, the condition is called hemopericardium.
Old age sets in from the eighth to the tenth year, depending on the individual dog. Longevity varies notably from one breed to another. Certain “de luxe” dogs, such as small Spaniels and English Terriers, live from sixteen to eighteen years. Some privileged few reach, or even live beyond, their twentieth year.
BRAIN TEASERS. Best for dogs that is left alone a lot. “Biscuit balls” and “food cubes” are great examples. These toys require the dog to solve types of puzzle in order to get a treat.

In most instances, the veterinarian will prescribe a series of ear treatments until the inflammation is completely eliminated. If any fragment of the inflammation is permitted to remain, there will often be a recurrence of the condition. In serious cases of otitis, the series of ear treatments is extended. If the condition has advanced too far, even the best germkilling and healing agents will be ineffective, in which case the veterinarian must resort to surgery. However, the conscientious pet owner will rarely neglect his animal until such a drastic alternative is necessary.

Lameness can also be caused by the rupture of ligaments or tendons. It is sufficient to state that these must be given immediate treatment, otherwise treatment is of no avail and the animal stands a chance of becoming permanently lame because the owner was too lethargic to get around to submitting the animal to proper treatment on time.

A dog should be taught to remain alone quietly from the earliest possible age. If the dog is made to sleep in its own bed in a separate room, this will assist materially in the training because in this way the dog already starts to become accustomed to staying alone. In any case, the specific technique to eliminate the barking and whining when the animal is left alone is quite simple. Place the dog in its bed. Walk out of your house or apartment, slam the door and remain outside a short distance from the door to hear what happens.
