Ear cropping is a major surgical operation, performed under general anaesthesia. In some techniques the cut ears are merely bound with adhesive tape, without the use of sutures. But the more common approach is to stitch the cut ear, and after a couple of days to have them bound in wire splints until healing is complete and the stitches can be removed. A third technique, which the author prefers, is to stitch the ears with a dissolvable suture material and then paste them together in a standing position on top of the head. The latter technique requires no bandaging and all the aftercare can be performed by the owner. This method is also accompanied by the least amount of discomfort to the animal.
At one year the teeth are fresh, white, and whole. At fifteen months the cusps of the lower pincers start to show some wear.
Altering is best performed at the earliest possible age, that is, as soon as the testicles descend. This occurs within the first few weeks of life. The best age for spaying is when the animal is from three to five months old. However, these operations can be performed at any time during the animal’s life.

Tumors are peculiar growths of tissue, of variable size, that most often are neither warm nor sensitive to the touch, may range from hard to quite soft, are fleshy in character, and seem to thrive independently of the state of nutrition of the body. They occur more commonly in older dogs than in younger ones and are a frequent cause of death. They may be present for months or years without any apparent discomfort or detriment to the animal, but are more favorably treated in the early stages.

Most common to infect the animal kingdom, roundworms grow 2 – 4 inches long, tan or white creatures with tapered ends that look like spaghetti. Puppies are usually born with them. Those infected with roundworms have a potbelly or a bloated look and dry, scaly coat. When your pets are in unsanitary conditions, don’t be surprised if your dog becomes infested. Unlike hookworm eggs, roundworm eggs are very resistant to drying, sunlight or antiseptics. They can last for years in soil and still be infectious.
