Some veterinarians prescribe a cough suppressant-antibiotic combinations following diagnosis. One recently developed antibiotic, azithromycin, has been found highly effective, particularly for mycoplasmal tracheobronchitis. Another option is the sulfa/trimethoprim combination. Since multiple organisms cause kennel cough, immunization may not eliminate totally eliminate the problem. Owners should also consider preventive measures to limit exposure, including refraining other dogs – both familiar and unfamiliar – from sharing food and toys with their pets.

Treatment is very simple and consists of the removal of the affected teeth. These teeth are so large that, if they are firmly embedded as is often the case, they first have to be split into two parts in order to be removed. When they are split, each part is removed separately, a not too complicated procedure. Once it is done, and the fistula is cleaned, healing usually takes place in a couple of days without any further treatment.

Tumors are classified as malignant, in which case they are diseaseproducing, and benign, in which case they are not diseaseproducing. Malignant tumors are often accompanied by a gradual wasting away of the body. Portions of them may become disconnected from the tumor, be transported by the circulatory system to other parts of the body, and form new centers of development. Malignant tumors commonly terminate in death. The term “cancer” is applied to malignant tumors. Benign tumors are purely local in character, are not transported to other parts of the body, and generally do not affect the animal’s health. Though benign tumors are not diseaseproducing in themselves, they may contribute to the development of disease conditions because of the locations in which they may appear. Thus a benign tumor of the throat may give rise to symptoms of suffocation. In the abdominal cavity they may pave the way for digestive disorders and other pathological processes. In the limbs they may give rise to lameness.
