When dogs are not well there are ordinarily certain signs that indicate that the pet is indisposed. The most constant symptom is a lack of appetite. This is accompanied by depression, change of disposition, indifferent response to commands or other stimuli, a ruffled and dull hair coat, or a fever.
In the summer time, the areas between the toes should be checked for ticks, which commonly attach themselves to this area. (This seems somehow natural since the dog will often step into a place where ticks happen to be, and the foot is, after all, the most convenient spot where the tick can take hold.) Many general ailments can occur on the feet, especially a variety of irritations. In such cases, the feet should be kept especially clean and also swabbed with ordinary household antiseptics, such as tincture of iodine. If the irritation does not heal or at least improve in a very few days, it is advisable to have it checked by a veterinarian in order to avoid any serious complications. The nails should be trimmed whenever necessary. They should not extend further than the foot pads. When the nails are too long, they cause pressure and discomfort.
Lameness can also be caused by the rupture of ligaments or tendons. It is sufficient to state that these must be given immediate treatment, otherwise treatment is of no avail and the animal stands a chance of becoming permanently lame because the owner was too lethargic to get around to submitting the animal to proper treatment on time.

When the parvovirus symptoms subside, a de-worming agent may be used. Your veterinarian will also probably restrict the food the dog may take. Fortunately, dogs that have recovered from the virus are immune from re-infection for the next twenty months. There is also a good chance that your dog will be immune for the rest of its life. You may also want to consider vaccines for your puppies. You will want to consult your veterinarian on the right circumstances and effects of a vaccination for you dog. Vaccination may prove to be the best line of defense against parvovirus.

The best thing to do in the ordinary case of constipation is to clean out the animal’s bowels and then to feed a bland diet of milk, cereal, or cooked rice mixed with meat broth, while withholding water, meat, and dog food. This diet is continued for a few days until the animal returns to normal, at which time there is a gradual return to the regular diet.

Treatment is generally successful. If it takes place before the hematoma becomes too extensive, healing will be complete and damage to the ear will be negligible. A common aftermath, which often cannot be helped, is that a normally upstanding ear may sometimes permanently lose its erectness and fall over to one side. If treatment takes place after the hematoma has wrought considerable damage, the ear may develop a more or less crinkled appearance. In untreated animals, the ear will almost always develop an exaggerated crinkled appearance not very different from that of the cauliflower ear of a wellbattered prizefighter.
