Selamectin, Ivermectin, and Moxidectin are available as treatments for microfilariae. These macrocyclic lactone anthelmintics are present in regular heartworm preventives as active ingredients, although they do not have FDA approval as microfilaricides. Although these drugs do not have regulatory clearance, they are still popular as treatments because of the absence of approved drugs to eliminate microfilariae. Thus, dogs using these ML anthelmintics must remain in the hospital after treatment to be monitored for any potential side effect due to the rapid death of the offspring worms. Use of ML preventives is expected to eventually eliminate all microfilariae in six to nine months’ time.

Convulsions in their most typical form are characterized by champing of the jaws, foaming at the mouth, falling on the side, involuntary passage of urine and stool, violent shaking movements over the whole body, then moaning, barking, and wild running about, and finally complete collapse or depression. They may occur in varying degrees of severity and any or all of the symptoms stated may present themselves in any one attack. Often, in spite of mild or severe attacks, many animals may appear quite normal between attacks. None the less, a convulsion is a very significant and often ultimately fatal symptom, and no effort at any extensive home treatment should be attempted. A mild sedative such as an aspirin will never do any harm, but it is rather unlikely that it will do any good. A convulsion is a veterinary problem.

Vitamin C: Dogs manufacture their own vitamin C and therefore have no special need for this vitamin. Humans that have a deficiency of this vitamin develop scurvy, which is cured by fresh fruit juices and vegetables. No disease resembling scurvy appears hi the dog. However, the bodies of dogs will occasionally fail to manufacture sufficient quantities of vitamin C, and variable degrees of irritation will result in the membranes of the mouth and gums. This condition responds readily to proper doses of this vitamin.

Degenerations of the lungs are also extremely common. The bestknown of these conditions is asthma, which is characterized by the appearance of a persistent cough, of a variable degree of depth, that becomes more raucous as the condition progresses. The veterinarian diagnoses the condition by observing the symptoms and by detecting asthmatic sounds with the stethoscope. Treatment usually is only alleviatory, since no cure for asthma has been determined. Mild cases of asthma are no deterrent to the wellbeing of old dogs, and, with relatively simple treatment, most dogs that are affected with it are permitted to live out their natural lives. In very severe cases, the animal is so uncomfortable that it is often put painlessly to sleep to avoid unnecessary suffering for the animal. The dog owner should remember that the disease should be treated while it is still mild and while treatment can still be reasonably effective.

Stand on the left side of the animal and hold the leash short and firmly in the left hand. Place the right hand flat on the animal’s back in the hip region. As you give the command “Sit!” press down with the right hand, forcing the animal into the sitting position. Repeat this procedure many times a day until the idea is mastered. Once the animal learns the meaning of “Sit” it is ready to learn the “Stay” command.

Vomiting and diarrhea are very common symptoms. There may also be manifestations or obvious signs of injury. Swellings of various sizes and descriptions may appear on any part of the body. There may be expressions of pain, hysteria, or fear. There may further be nervous twitchings, convulsions, partial or complete paralysis. The urine elimination may be dribbling, painful, bloody, excessive, or insignificant in quantity. The animal may have painful bowel movements or strain excessively or unsuccessfully to pass the stool.
