Old age is further characterized by a gradual degeneration of the various organs of the body. The diseases that cause these degenerations are our primary concern in the treatment of the diseases of old age. Prolonging the life of the old dog depends upon our ability to prevent these diseases from taking place and our efforts to retard their development once they have appeared. These are very challenging problems that demand all the resources that the veterinarian has at his disposal.

Hip displasia is a genetic disease, meaning the pup can inherit it from its parents. Note that not all dogs inclined to get this disease will acquire it. Other factors also contribute, like environmental factors, rapid weight changes and other genetic factors as well. Tracing your pet’s family lineage will help you determine if your dog is prone to this disease. If there is no incidence of hip displasia in your pet’s family, then your dog will not get it.

If the animal insists on getting on furniture anyway, it should be grasped by the scruff of the neck, told briskly, “No, No, No,” and put down. The obedient pet will grasp the idea very quickly. With particularly stubborn dogs, more drastic measures may be attempted. Commercial repellents, which may be bought at any pet shop, may be tried. If these do not do a satisfactory job, a loaded mousetrap may be placed under some newspapers in a favorite chair. When the animal hops on the chair, the loud, sudden noise of the closing trap will serve as a surprise that will deeply impress the animal. After a few shocks of this kind, the animal will be extremely wary before it goes on furniture. Soon it will simply get out of the habit.

Most common to infect the animal kingdom, roundworms grow 2 – 4 inches long, tan or white creatures with tapered ends that look like spaghetti. Puppies are usually born with them. Those infected with roundworms have a potbelly or a bloated look and dry, scaly coat. When your pets are in unsanitary conditions, don’t be surprised if your dog becomes infested. Unlike hookworm eggs, roundworm eggs are very resistant to drying, sunlight or antiseptics. They can last for years in soil and still be infectious.
