Although total elimination of adult heartworms may not be possible, dogs have shown clinical improvement following adulticide therapy. A common follow-up to the therapy is heartworm antigen testing: the antigen will not be detected four months after adulticide treatment if all or a very small number of the parasites survived.

Two kinds of fat exist. One is saturated (animal fat) and the other is polyunsaturated (vegetable fat). Your dog will need both and taken together supply essential fatty acids (EFA) needed to maintain good health.

In regard to the charge that animals are rendered prone to disease by clipping, this, too, is based on a misconception. It is commonly stated that irritations of the skin may result from clipping. The fact is that clipping is done with a machine. The machine is run by a motor. In the process of clipping, the motor gets hot. If the excessively hot machine is applied to the animal’s skin, naturally the skin will get burned. If the clipping machine is dull, the skin will become scratched. It is therefore clear that if careful, competent, professional work is done on the animal, these difficulties will not be encountered.

Stand on the left side of the animal and hold the leash short and firmly in the left hand. Place the right hand flat on the animal’s back in the hip region. As you give the command “Sit!” press down with the right hand, forcing the animal into the sitting position. Repeat this procedure many times a day until the idea is mastered. Once the animal learns the meaning of “Sit” it is ready to learn the “Stay” command.

In dogs, dislocation of the eyeball is an emergency. If the eyeball is not replaced within a couple of hours, it will become dehydrated and death of the eye tissue will be the unvarying result. When this occurs, surgical removal of the eyeball is the only practical alternative. Therefore, when eyeball dislocation takes place, immediate veterinary treatment is imperative. If it should so happen that it is impossible to get in touch with a veterinarian within two hours, the owner will have to take the chance and attempt to replace the eyeball himself. Usually this is not a difficult task, for most often the eyeball can be made to slip back into its socket very easily.

Animals with uremia usually present a picture of extreme depression, intermittent vomiting and diarrhea, and a strong, fetid odor from the mouth. The veterinarian makes a positive diagnosis of this disease by urine analysis. It may take months and sometimes years before there is sufficient destruction of kidney tissue to give rise to symptoms of uremia. Unless the diagnosis is quickly established and bold therapeutic measures are taken, the animal will usually die. If too much destruction of tissue has already taken place, the animal will die no matter what is done. The routine manner of handling this condition is to apply heavy doses of dextrose and saline so that the animal does not get depleted. A nonirritating diuretic, such as ascorbic acid, is also indicated. Blood transfusions are of further help. Unfortunately the ordinary case is usually presented to the veterinarian when the animal is beyond hope. The owner is generally advised to have the animal put to sleep because of the hopelessness of the condition and the expense of the treatment. However, if the owner is willing, the veterinarian will throw everything in the book at the animal, and if it does happen to recover, it will be due less to the skill of the veterinarian than to an aggregate of factors beyond his direct control.
