After the animal is dry, the hair should be combed out again. If this procedure is rigorously followed, the animal’s coat will take on a sleek, silken appearance that will be very satisfying to both owner and dog.
But when all is said and done, what has been the overall debilitating effect of this lack of exercise on dogs? Amazingly enough, not very much. In spite of the physical disadvantage we have imposed on most of our dogs in not keeping them tuned up to athletic razorsharpness, they still seem to be clean, sleek, vigorous, happy, and healthy, and they generally live to a ripe old age. Only occasionally will difficulties arise that are directly attributable to lack of exercise. When animals such as Great Danes are raised in one or tworoom city apartments, they will sometimes have physical breakdowns after several years of such preposterous confinement. But even such occurrences are not as common as is generally believed.
The most obvious way to keep a dog off furniture is never to encourage an animal to go on it. A pet should never be left alone at night in a room where it can be free to make use of a sofa or bed. Nor should the young dog be picked up and held while the owner is seated on a chair or sofa.

In the same way as in other domestic animals, the age of dogs can be ascertained mainly on the basis of an examination of the teeth. For various reasons this method is not as reliable in dogs as in other domestic animals, and therefore the determination of age in this manner in dogs must be considered at best only an approximation.

But any veterinarian will tell you that animals presented for clipping are practically never properly combed. The result is that the long hair becomes snarled and matted, and serves as a receptacle for every conceivable variety of filth.
