It has often been erroneously suggested that it is not advisable to bathe puppies before they are four to six months old. If human infants can be bathed soon after birth, then does it not seem foolish to believe that to bathe a puppy—relatively so much stronger than a human infant—is dangerous? This belief seems based on the mistaken notion that puppies that are bathed when they are too young will get distemper. The fact is that if a puppy is improperly dried after a bath, and is permitted to go out into the cold air, it might catch a cold and thus be more readily susceptible to distemper. However, if the animal is completely dry before being permitted outside, no harm will ever come of a bath regardless of the age of the animal. It is often even advisable, and sometimes necessary, to bathe a very young puppy, especially if it is very filthy or laden with fleas. It is thus perfectly safe to bathe a dog, regardless of age, provided that the simplest commonsense precautions are taken. And the essential one is that the animal must be thoroughly dry before being exposed to the open air.
The most immediate concern of new dog owners is that of housebreaking the pet. In order to accomplish this task, the essential principle that the owner must recognize is that it is always the desire of the dog to please its master. Nothing can give the dog greater pleasure than to know that its actions have met with approval; nothing can cause the dog greater displeasure than to know that its behavior has called forth disapproval.
The next point to consider is whether to get a longhaired or a shorthaired dog. The prospective owner of a longhaired dog must be prepared to spend the time and money needed for properly grooming and maintaining the appearance of such an animal. The expense of clipping and bathing will cost anywhere from $25 to $100 a year and more; further, the owner must not mind the discipline, and sometimes the sweat, of giving the dog a thorough daily combing and brushing. For people of limited means and leisure, the shorthaired breeds are recommended because these require very little time and trouble, and the expense of maintaining their appearance can be kept to a minimum. Of course people still have their preferences. But with dogs, as with anything else, the discriminating use of common sense in what you buy will tend to lessen future hardships and annoyances.
