Uremia is an acute, usually fatal disease, characterized by the accumulation of urinary products in the blood stream. It is caused by the breakdown of kidney tissue with the result that the proper functioning of the kidney is disrupted and waste materials that should go into the formation of urine become absorbed into the blood instead. The disease may occur in animals of all ages but is much more common in old ones.
Acute cases of mumps may be caused by injury, chemical effects due to the application of irritant drugs, or infection by a specific germ, or it may appear as a secondary manifestation of certain infectious diseases, inflammations of the throat or mouth, and other local inflammations. The chronic form may result from repeated attacks of the acute form or from obstruction of the salivary ducts of the gland.
If the dog whines or barks, come back in, grasp the animal by the scruff of the neck, tell it sharply, “No! No! No!”; go on scolding the animal thoroughly for a couple of minutes and put the animal back in its bed. Repeat this procedure several times each day. As the dog starts to quiet down more and more, remain away from home for longer and longer periods. In a very short time the animal becomes completely accustomed to remaining alone, and does not even bat an eyelash when you leave.

In a variable amount of time—anywhere from a week to three weeks—the dog will become conditioned to the fact that when it does not perform its functions properly, it is punished. When it does perform its functions properly, it is praised. Soon the dog will always perform its duty as required, not because it recognizes a sanitary code, but simply because of the desire to meet with approval and avoid displeasure.

During the cooler seasons of the year, or in places where the climate is generally cool, very young puppies can be encouraged to stay in the bed by placing a heating pad or a hotwater bag wrapped in a towel into the box. This is very comforting to the animal. The animal should be placed in the bed several times a day, always with the heating pad or hotwater bag, so that it comes to associate pleasantness with the experience. In a very few days the animal will enter the box of its own accord. In warmer weather, the associaton of pleasantness may be achieved by giving the animal a tidbit every time it is put into the box.

When the parvovirus symptoms subside, a de-worming agent may be used. Your veterinarian will also probably restrict the food the dog may take. Fortunately, dogs that have recovered from the virus are immune from re-infection for the next twenty months. There is also a good chance that your dog will be immune for the rest of its life. You may also want to consider vaccines for your puppies. You will want to consult your veterinarian on the right circumstances and effects of a vaccination for you dog. Vaccination may prove to be the best line of defense against parvovirus.
