For a change, look beyond the labels and advertisements and look into what exactly your dog food contains. What follows is a partial list to help you find out if your dog is getting what he needs in the right amounts.
The basic principle to be understood in the feeding of dogs is that, with only minor variations, they have the same nutritive requirements as man. A dog apparently has less need for starches, and its digestive juices do not handle fatty foods well. Thus, the dog’s meat should always be quite lean, otherwise it will commonly cause a stomach upset with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea.
Most common to infect the animal kingdom, roundworms grow 2 – 4 inches long, tan or white creatures with tapered ends that look like spaghetti. Puppies are usually born with them. Those infected with roundworms have a potbelly or a bloated look and dry, scaly coat. When your pets are in unsanitary conditions, don’t be surprised if your dog becomes infested. Unlike hookworm eggs, roundworm eggs are very resistant to drying, sunlight or antiseptics. They can last for years in soil and still be infectious.

Vitamin Bl is another vitamin essential to the maintenance of dog health. Diets that are deficient in this vitamin may result in loss of appetite, failure to excrete regularly, lowered resistance to infection, paralysis of the hind legs, possibly running fits (or—as it is variously known—fright disease, barking fits, furious fits, canine hysteria), convulsions, and death. The main sources of this vitamin are meat, brewer’s yeast, and wheat germ. The latter two substances are commonly incorporated in commercial dog foods to provide the amount of vitamin Bl necessary to prevent possible deficiencies. Dogs that are fed table scraps usually get sufficient quantities of this vitamin to meet their needs. It is therefore apparent that deficiencies of this vitamin can occur only under fairly extreme cases of improper nourishment, which means that vitamin Bl deficiencies are not too commonly met with in household pets whose owners make even a minimal effort to feed them properly.

A dog will exhibit clinical signs of kennel cough between five to 10 days following infection from carriers. Although the condition sounds serious, the self-limiting nature of the disease makes it generally harmless, with dogs recovering without any major effect a week or two after. Kennel cough symptoms can persist for up to 20 days. Owners should note that extremely young and old dogs may develop serious respiratory complications from the disease.

Tell the animal, “Sit.” Then command the animal “Stay,” and walk away a few feet from it. If the animal follows you, grasp it by the collar and return it to its original sitting position. Repeat the performance until the animal gets the idea. When a pretty fair mastery has been achieved, repeat the performance and gradually walk farther and farther away from the animal and remain away for longer and longer periods. If this training is done within the household, an acid test would be for the animal to learn to obey the command when you walk into another room and remain there for several minutes. Sooner or later, with patience and persistency, the animal can be taught to obey this useful command. When the “Stay” command is thoroughly understood, the animal is ready to learn the “Come” command.
