Excessive straining to pass the stool is most commonly caused by impaction or proctitis. Impaction was discussed in the last section. Proctitis is the term applied to an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the rectum. The outcome of proctitis depends on the severity of the inflammatory process, but when it occurs in an uncomplicated form—that is, where the pathology is confined to the rectal mucosa—its termination is usually favorable. It is frequently encountered in dogs, and though it is not often a serious condition it should be handled only by the veterinarian.

The best thing to do in the ordinary case of constipation is to clean out the animal’s bowels and then to feed a bland diet of milk, cereal, or cooked rice mixed with meat broth, while withholding water, meat, and dog food. This diet is continued for a few days until the animal returns to normal, at which time there is a gradual return to the regular diet.

Very young puppies, say between the ages of six weeks to two months, are usually first broken to paper indoors. This is commonly accomplished by lifting the animal and placing it on paper as soon as any “danger signals” are noticed. This is combined with punishment for mistakes and reward for correct conduct. After any mistake the dog should be put back on its paper. The paper should be placed in one specific area. Usually, after a few days, the animal will be noted to make a beeline for the paper whenever it has to “go.”

If in huge numbers, a dog may vomit these worms or discharge them all as a whole in the fecal matter. Roundworms can cause diarrhea – the infestation’s effect is evident on your pet’s general appearance. They can also cause intestinal blockage and stool cannot pass if they become too many. Since roundworms are zoonotic, they can be transferred to humans. They cause an infection known as “Visceral Larva Migrans”, which result in inflammation of muscle tissue. Young children are susceptible to transfer and can experience eye inflammations leading to blindness.

The common name for hernia is rupture. A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or part of an organ out of its normal location through an opening in the surrounding tissue. Most commonly the rupture takes place in the abdominal wall that encases the abdominal organs, and a swelling of variable size appears on the belly or between the hind legs. The rupture in the abdominal wall may be due to injury to this area or to its inherent weakness. There is often a hereditary predisposition to hernia. Though the swelling is usually painless and causes the animal only slight discomfort, it is sometimes very painful. The only treatment is surgical. The herniated organs are put back into the abdominal cavity and the rupture is repaired. In most cases, the operation is not difficult and the results are very favorable.

Signs and symptoms of parvovirus differ among dogs infected by such. Unfortunately, some dogs show very few symptoms. Some do not show any at all. Typically, parvovirus causes severe enteritis, or an inflammation of the intestines. This further leads to vomiting, diarrhea – which may be bloody, dark feces, dehydration, and lethargy. This virus will affect any breed, sex and age of dog. The virus manifests itself more severely among younger puppies. There are a few breeds that are more susceptible to parvovirus than others. Among them are Rottweilers, Labradors, and Doberman Pinschers. Puppies six months and below usually manifest a more serious form of the disease.
