While cancerous growths may appear in dogs of any age, they are apparently more common in older dogs and especially in females. The disastrous consequences of this dread disease has been amply publicized in the human family, and it may be emphasized that they are just as bad in the dog.
Air breathed in through the dog's nose passes on its way to the lungs through the two nasal cavities behind the nose. These cavities are lined by a mucous membrane containing many nerve endings stimulated by odors. Smell is the dog's most acute sense. A dog continually sniffs the air, the ground, and nearby objects to learn what is happening around it. The indentation in the dog's forehead just above eye level is called the stop. The stop in some dogs is deeper than that in others.
Doggie “potato chips” is also a favorite. These “edible chips” can last to a minimum of an hour to a couple of days. They are available in different shapes like pig ears, snouts, cow knuckles, femurs, hooves and bully sticks. Others are bone-shaped made from a variety of vegetables such as carrots.

In the summer time, the areas between the toes should be checked for ticks, which commonly attach themselves to this area. (This seems somehow natural since the dog will often step into a place where ticks happen to be, and the foot is, after all, the most convenient spot where the tick can take hold.) Many general ailments can occur on the feet, especially a variety of irritations. In such cases, the feet should be kept especially clean and also swabbed with ordinary household antiseptics, such as tincture of iodine. If the irritation does not heal or at least improve in a very few days, it is advisable to have it checked by a veterinarian in order to avoid any serious complications. The nails should be trimmed whenever necessary. They should not extend further than the foot pads. When the nails are too long, they cause pressure and discomfort.

The animal should be given a thorough daily combing, and during the warmer seasons of the year it is advisable to clip the hair of certain breeds. Proper grooming will prevent a considerable variety of diseases, and the comfort that will be derived from it will encourage the animal to live with the delightful zest that pet lovers like to see in their dogs. To summarize, we may fall back on the superprosaic maxim that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If the owner can be impelled to make an honest effort to cooperate with his veterinarian in preventing disease and in treating disease without delay whenever it should happen to strike, there is every likelihood that he will be blessed with a happy and healthy pet for a good long time to come.

In a variable amount of time—anywhere from a week to three weeks—the dog will become conditioned to the fact that when it does not perform its functions properly, it is punished. When it does perform its functions properly, it is praised. Soon the dog will always perform its duty as required, not because it recognizes a sanitary code, but simply because of the desire to meet with approval and avoid displeasure.
