The “Stop” command is often taught in conjunction with the “Heel” command, but it is better not to attempt to teach it until the animal is quite thoroughly accomplished in the art of heeling. While walking the animal, stop and give the command “Stop” at the same time. Make the animal stop and also stand on all fours. Do not permit the animal to sit. Repeat the procedure until the animal masters the idea. As with heeling, the acid test is to make the animal repeat the performance without a leash.

The US Food and Drug Administration has already approved an organic arsenical compound, melarsomine dihydrochloride, to kill adult heartworms. Dogs that will use this therapy are required to undergo an extensive pretreatment evaluation and must remain in the hospital during treatment.

The thoroughness of this final rinsing cannot be overemphasized. If even a small quantity of soap is left on the animal, a severe irritation of the skin may ensue. In fact, improper rinsing of dogs during bathing, veterinarians have found, is one of the commonest causes of eczemas. In rinsing an animal, not only should the shower spray be depended upon, but the bather should dig into the dog’s hair with his fingertips to assist the action of the spray.

The nose may be warm, dry, and encrusted, and it may bear a discharge of variable nature. There may be intermittent sneezing attacks. The membranes of the mouth and gums may be inflamed or eroded, and the teeth may be dirty, infected, loose, or encrusted with tartar and emitting a foul odor. There may be a cough; labored, quick, or very slow breathing; or exhaustion after mild exercise.

The treatment of otitis consists in the removal of the cause. In minor conditions, it is sufficient to remove the matted hair, to clean the ear thoroughly, and to apply some antiseptic preparation to the irritated parts. The procedure, outlined above, for the general hygiene of the ear is quite adequate to treat mild cases though, instead of repeating it only two or three times a week, it will be more effective if it is done every day until the condition is cured. In resistant cases, where no improvement is clearly apparent in a week, the case should be given over to a veterinarian.

It seems to be fairly common knowledge that in diabetes there is elimination of sugar in the urine. It also seems to be well known that, to counteract the undesirable effects of this sugar in the urine, the patient has to give himself injections of insulin, which burns up the sugar so that it is utilized by the body and is not excreted in the urine. But what is not generally known is that the above condition is what is called diabetes mellitus; and that there is also another form of diabetes called diabetes insipidus, in which there is no sugar in the urine and for which it is not necessary to give injections of insulin. Both these forms of diabetes are diseases that are longlasting and usually fatal. In the early stages of both these diseases there is an excessive thirst and good appetite. Otherwise the affected animal appears quite normal. But gradually, in spite of its good appetite, the affected animal becomes thinner and thinner until it finally looks quite emaciated. In diabetes mellitus, there may also appear ulcerations of the surface of the eyeballs or the formation of cataracts. There may also be signs of vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, bronchitis, penumonia, ulceration of the skin, and excessive falling hair.
