In addition to the regular food, dogs, during the first year of life, should be fed some vitamin supplement to assist in the proper development of the bones and the eyes. This can be done by giving about half a teaspoon of codliver oil a day to animals weighing less than twenty pounds, and a full teaspoon to animals over twenty pounds. The very large breeds may be fed as much as two teaspoons a day. If tablets are preferred, the ordinary “oneaday” vitamin preparations that can be bought at any pharmacy will usually serve admirably when given to the dog weighing twenty pounds or more in the same dosage as is given to man. Smaller dogs are given proportionately smaller doses.

Studies show that all 50 US states have reported cases of heartworm infection, a condition that can affect all dogs regardless of sex, age or habitat. The highest incidence for dogs not taking preventive medicine rises to a high of 45%, including areas from the Gulf of Mexico to New Jersey, while some areas record rates of 5% and below for the canine heartworm disease. The difference is due mainly to mosquito, environmental and dog population factors, although all dogs in affected regions are still seen as at-risk animals that need to be monitored regularly by veterinarians and covered by prevention programs.

The membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the front of the eyeball is called the conjunctiva. An inflammation of this membrane is called conjunctivitis. Where only the eye itself is involved, the condition is called a primary conjunctivitis. Where the eye irritation is accompanied by another disease, such as rabies or distemper, the condition is called a secondary conjunctivitis. Mild forms of primary conjunctivitis are usually not serious if given prompt attention. If the condition is neglected, however, it often becomes increasingly resistant to treatment.

Special care should be given to the dew claws, the nails on the inside portion of the feet that do not touch the ground. If these claws are not kept short enough, they may grow into the pad of the foot.

In regard to docking tails, the amount of tail to be removed depends either on show requirements for the particular breed or on personal preference. The best age at which to perform the operation is when the animal is a couple of days old, although it can be done at any time during the animal’s life. At the very early age, however, the operation is very simple, is accompanied by very little pain or hemorrhage, can be performed without anaesthesia, requires no sutures or bandages, results in very rapid healing, and seldom has any undesirable consequences. At a later age at least local anaesthesia is necessary, bandages and sutures are required, some pain and annoyance are invariably encountered, healing is slower, and infection, though quite uncommon, is much more likely.
