The shape of a dog is determined by three major structures--the head, the body, and the legs. The size and form of these structures vary greatly as do, for example, coloration and hair characteristics.

Dogs also exhibit allergies to the food they eat. And this is perhaps the most tedious to diagnose because food allergies can mimic any of the other allergies mentioned in this article.

Fleas are parasites that feed off your dog’s blood. Flea eggs can be found almost everywhere – in your couch, carpet, etc. so the likelihood of infection is very high. To know if your dog has fleas, look for flea excrement – small, dark, curly dots that are also known as “flea dirt.” To do this, brush your pet’s coat with a white cloth or sheet and look for these black specks, which contains digested blood that looks reddish brown when wet. If your dog has a darker coat, eggs that resemble dandruff is visible when a magnifying glass is used.

Recently, a new method has been devised whereby very young puppies (as young as nine weeks of age) may be given a single vaccination that confers immunity for life. The material injected consists of a form of live virus from which the diseaseproducing power has been eliminated by various means. This method is quickly winning favor among impressive numbers of veterinarians. When it was first produced, it was not without its shortcomings. Considerable caution had to be exercised in its use and disastrous results were occasionally reported in the literature. However, rapid progress has been made and the shortcomings of this singleinjection method have been almost entirely eliminated. It is already apparent that if the current wave of popularity continues at its present rate, it will become officially recognized as the best method in the eradication of dogdom’s worst affliction.

Air breathed in through the dog's nose passes on its way to the lungs through the two nasal cavities behind the nose. These cavities are lined by a mucous membrane containing many nerve endings stimulated by odors. Smell is the dog's most acute sense. A dog continually sniffs the air, the ground, and nearby objects to learn what is happening around it. The indentation in the dog's forehead just above eye level is called the stop. The stop in some dogs is deeper than that in others.

In any discussion of bathing, the question often arises: What about dry shampoo? Bran, corn meal, Fuller’s earth, and many other preparations have been recommended as dry shampoos for dogs. A moderate quantity of the selected material is rubbed into the animal’s coat and then combed out with a finetoothed comb. This seems to have a cleansing and deodorant effect. It is useful for dogs that have a neurotic aversion to soapandwater baths. But, at best, the dry shampoo cannot replace a soapandwater shampoo. True, it is better than no shampoo at all, but the fact still remains that if a dog gets dirty enough to warrant giving it a bath, nothing better than soap, water, and good old “elbow grease” have ever been invented.
