Most people have peculiar ideas about the feeding of candy or any other form of sweets. It is a common belief that sweets will cause worms in dogs. This is not true. (Something more will be said about this in the section where worms are discussed. ) It is another common notion that sweets, in any form or quantity, are bad for dogs. The fact is that when sweets are fed in moderate quantity they will do no more harm to the dog than they will to the human. The question logically follows: how much is a moderate quantity? The best answer is simply that the dog should be permitted to have an occasional nibble of candy, let us say, as a reward for especially good behavior. If the dog is restricted to this occasional nibble, no harm can result. Of course, if the dog never has candy, it never will be missed.
The main way to prevent chewing is by improving obedience in the dog. The dog should be reminded of this by daily exercises in obedience. Once the pet is thoroughly obedient, a sharp “No, No” is usually sufficient to do the trick.
CHEW TOYS. These are perfect for the dog that likes to chew a lot. Instead of your dog chewing your furniture, why not buy these TOUGH little babies for them. These types of dog toy are usually made of nylon or latex rubber. The “King Kong Toys” are among the popular brands of chew toys. You can experiment by stuffing these toys with peanut butter or cheese spread, freeze them and give them to your dog for hours of licking and chewing fun.

The most important aspect of foot care in dogs is to keep them clean. Some dogs seem to recognize this fact instinctively and will wash their own feet. The routine cleaning that the animal receives in its bath is quite sufficient for ordinary foot hygiene, although additional cleaning may be necessary if the feet happen to get especially soiled. It is not a bad idea to clean the feet every once in a while with a piece of absorbent cotton saturated with alcohol. This will tend to prevent disease conditions that may occur between the toes as a result of uncleanliness. Special precaution should be taken during the winter season of the year, especially in large cities, where snow is often saturated with rock salt. The rock salt can cause an annoying irritation of the feet. Cleaning them daily during this season with cotton and alcohol will tend to prevent this minor ailment.

If the diagnosis can be established in the early stages, treatment may be attempted in the form of good nutrition, potent tonics, and good hygienic measures. In the latter stages of the disease, a favorable outcome is very unlikely and putting the animal to sleep is the only humane alternative.

Carsickness seems to be as common in the dog as it is in the human family. Apparently it is caused by excessive nervousness or involves a peculiar sensitivity to riding in moving vehicles, such as cars, trains, or buses, but occurs most commonly in cars. It manifests itself, while riding, in a stomach upset with symptoms of nausea and vomiting, which quickly disappear when the animal is removed from the vehicle.
