Stones may be remedied by surgical removal. The operation for the removal of bladder or urethral stones is quite safe if the animal is in good condition and if the disease process has not progressed too far. In debilitated animals the outlook is less optimistic. Inflammations not due to stones are treated with appropriate medications, usually in the form of the conventional germ killing agents. The symptom of blood in the urine may be caused by certain parasites of the urinary system, but since they are relatively uncommon it has been deemed advisable merely to mention them and not to discuss them in detail.
Do dogs get hepatitis? People obviously do. But do dogs get this disease? And how does this affect them? Hepatitis is actually a very broad term. It will signify an inflammation of the liver, although the causes may actually differ. Since the liver is a very complex and vital organ a disease that incapacitates it will prove to be fatal. The liver¡¯s primary functions are the detoxification, metabolism, the storage of glycogen and the synthesis of plasma protein. It also produces the bile that aids in digestion. The good news is, the liver is a large organ with plenty of reserves. The bad news is, since it has a large reserve, it won¡¯t show apparent symptoms unless the liver is seriously damaged.
Now and then selfstyled humane agencies will raise quite a fuss by advocating that dogs should not be clipped. They usually maintain that dogs will not be made more comfortable by this process, that the hair coat serves as a protective and insulating mechanism, and that by removing the coat the animal will be rendered more prone to disease. While the people who make these statements certainly do not have improper motives, the plain fact is that they simply do not know what they are talking about.

In any discussion of bathing, the question often arises: What about dry shampoo? Bran, corn meal, Fuller’s earth, and many other preparations have been recommended as dry shampoos for dogs. A moderate quantity of the selected material is rubbed into the animal’s coat and then combed out with a finetoothed comb. This seems to have a cleansing and deodorant effect. It is useful for dogs that have a neurotic aversion to soapandwater baths. But, at best, the dry shampoo cannot replace a soapandwater shampoo. True, it is better than no shampoo at all, but the fact still remains that if a dog gets dirty enough to warrant giving it a bath, nothing better than soap, water, and good old “elbow grease” have ever been invented.

The body may be covered with straight or with wavy hair. Hair shafts emerge from tiny follicles in the skin. The shafts are connected to tiny muscles that cause the dog's hair to stand up, or bristle, when they contract.

Although not all vomiting and bloody diarrhea is caused by parvovirus, it would still pay to take a trip to the veterinarian for a check up. The only way to verify whether a dog has parvovirus or not is clinical and laboratory diagnosis. It would be better to err on the side of safety on this matter. If you think your dog has the parvovirus, a quick trip to the veterinarian won¡¯t be in vain. To treat the disease, a veterinarian will most likely recommend supportive therapy. This will involve replacing the fluids lost due to diarrhea and vomiting. This will probably be an electrolyte solution administered intravenously. In less severe cases, oral solutions will suffice. Antibiotics may be given to control secondary infections. Medicines to control vomiting may also be given.
