Tumors are peculiar growths of tissue, of variable size, that most often are neither warm nor sensitive to the touch, may range from hard to quite soft, are fleshy in character, and seem to thrive independently of the state of nutrition of the body. They occur more commonly in older dogs than in younger ones and are a frequent cause of death. They may be present for months or years without any apparent discomfort or detriment to the animal, but are more favorably treated in the early stages.
Children can accidentally swallow fleas that have eggs, causing intense discomfort. Fish can also be an intermediate host – so be careful in eating raw fish. Antiparasitic agents, praziquantel and epsiprantel are both used both by oral medication or injection.
Old age is further characterized by a gradual degeneration of the various organs of the body. The diseases that cause these degenerations are our primary concern in the treatment of the diseases of old age. Prolonging the life of the old dog depends upon our ability to prevent these diseases from taking place and our efforts to retard their development once they have appeared. These are very challenging problems that demand all the resources that the veterinarian has at his disposal.

In regard to docking tails, the amount of tail to be removed depends either on show requirements for the particular breed or on personal preference. The best age at which to perform the operation is when the animal is a couple of days old, although it can be done at any time during the animal’s life. At the very early age, however, the operation is very simple, is accompanied by very little pain or hemorrhage, can be performed without anaesthesia, requires no sutures or bandages, results in very rapid healing, and seldom has any undesirable consequences. At a later age at least local anaesthesia is necessary, bandages and sutures are required, some pain and annoyance are invariably encountered, healing is slower, and infection, though quite uncommon, is much more likely.

SQUEAKY TOYS. For these toys, choose the rubber over the stuffed toys for durability and to avoid synthetic materials. These little noisemakers are good for training your dog’s hunting skills.

Something should also be said of the great variety of commercial dog biscuits. While some companies will claim that their biscuits are a complete food, and are often justified in their claim, most experts agree that the large majority of the biscuits that are manufactured serve best only as a supplementary food. They may be fed dry, but usually are preferred by dogs when mixed with meat and broth. If biscuits are fed, then the feeding of vegetables is usually unnecessary, because the essential elements contained in vegetables are present in most biscuits.
