acne raised scar treatment
Raised acne scars can be
addressed, but knowing that doesn't make it easier when you look in the
mirror and see a big pimple on your chin! The good news is that
learning about
acne and taking some simple steps can help you feel better about
your face.
All acne scars are not alike. There are different kinds of acne
scarring: ice pick scarring, atrophic scarring, and hypertrophic
scarring. Ice pick scars are deep pitted scars with steep edges.
Hypertrophic scar, more common on the back and chest, are thick lumpy
scars that sit above the surface of the skin.
Color changes come in three basic flavors: post inflammatory erythema
(pink and purple patches at the site of acne lesions), post
inflammatory hyperpigmentation (brown/black discoloration at the site
of the acne lesion), and post inflammatory hypopigmentation (white
marks at the site of a healed acne lesion). Scars result when the skin
repairs wounds caused by accident, diseases, or surgery. Younger skin
makes strong repairs and tends to over heal resulting in larger,
thicker scars. Patients are often surprised to discover that another
skin change is in fact a form of acne scarring.
Acne blemishes cause embarrassment and
distress and may appear at any
time, and for many, acne blemish control is vital. If you can't prevent
them, you can at least keep them under control. Hormonal activity due
to puberty, menstruation or androgen use often brings rashes of pimples
on, as does the use of anabolic steroids. Generally the accumulation of
dead skins cells is a causal agent, though stress is known to stimulate
new cell formation as well as an excess of oil production and lowered
immunity.
Nodules are more likely
to leave permanent scars than other types of acne. Most serious scarring
is caused by more severe acne, and the best way to deal with it is to
get treatment soon after the acne appears. If you have nodules,
see your doctor or dermatologist right away. He or she will assess your
acne and will probably prescribe some combination of topical gels or
creams. The doctor may also prescribe antibiotic pills, oral
contraceptives for some teen girls with acne (the hormones in birth
control pills can help control acne in some cases), or other medication
such as isotretinoin if the acne is severe.
