Evidence is accumulating for a role of CoQ10 in the treatment of mitochondrial disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). A number of case reports suggest a beneficial effect of supplemental CoQ in patients with known mitochondrial disorders. Perhaps the strongest evidence for a beneficial effect of CoQ supplements comes, however, from animal studies. Oral administration of CoQ10 produces dose-dependent neuroprotective effects against lesions produced by mitochondrial toxins. CoQ10 also protects against 1-methyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) toxicity in mice. Furthermore, CoQ10 supplementation exerts neuroprotective effects in transgenic mouse models of familial ALS and Parkinson's disease. The potential efficacy of CoQ10 in Parkinson's and Huntington's disease is currently being evaluated in human clinical trials.
Since the early 1900?s and with the discovery of antibiotics, usage and public knowledge of naturopathic medicine has declined. This was most likely due to the ? nature of many of the new drugs developed and increased safety of surgical procedures. Diseases such as influenza and measles, which today are generally nuisances and easily treated in most people, were very scary and sometimes life threatening in these earlier times. The plague literally plagued people. Today we are blessed with better opportunities for proper nutrition, hygiene, and information about these diseases, all of which lessen the threat of many of the more common diseases becoming life threatening. The attraction that people had towards conventional medicine was and is understandable. Treatments that decrease symptoms of a disease are often well received by patients who are dealing with a troublesome condition. Most advances in technology are viewed as progress and people want the best, especially where their health or that of their loved
Increased folic acid intakes can lower homocysteine levels, and high homocysteine levels are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer?s disease..
Energy is required for the functions of all biological systems. Dietary energy is commonly given in units of Calories or kilocalories, but the acceptable scientific terminology is joules. The primary sources of dietary energy are fats, carbohydrates and protein. Ethanol also contributes dietary energy in individuals consuming alcoholic beverages, but alcohol is not generally categorized as a nutrient. The energy for biological processes is obtained from these sources by intermediary metabolism. Our bodies are very efficient in storing energy for future use. Stored energy is primarily in the form of fat in adipose tissue, but a small amount of carbohydrate is stored in the liver and muscle as glycogen. Intermediary metabolism converts the energy consumed into the forms for storage or into forms which are readily available for biological processes such as compounds with high energy phosphate bonds.
These vitamins also can be stored in body fat, so taking. supplements of fat-soluble vitamins-especially vitamin A or vitamin D-is. risky unless prescribed by a doctor, since the stored excess can build. up to dangerous levels..
Indole-3-carbinol and tea polyphenols may provide protection against PAH carcinogenesis by affecting maternal and/or fetal enzymes that metabolize the carcinogen or by acting as general antioxidants. Chlorophyllin may act by binding with PAHs andpreventing them from reaching the fetus. Our results should allow us to develop an under-standing of these possible mechanisms. Eventually, we hope that these studies will result in dietary recommendations for pregnant women that reduce the risk of harm to the fetus from exposure to ubiquitous environmental chemicals. |

A
Protein Dietary Supplement. Only Better.
Immunocal is a bonded cysteine dietary supplement. What is bonded
cysteine, exactly? It's simply the name of
elements with unique
benefits, which are found in certain special proteins. Immunocal is a
protein supplement whose benefits reach far beyond nutrition, by virtue
of the high amount of bonded cysteine it contains. In fact, Immunocal
is considered a "nutraceutical" and is different from other protein
supplements in its ability to support the immune system.
