In a normal, healthy individual eating a diet rich in vitamin C, we might expect adequate levels of vitamin C for normal cell functions. Any condition that would decrease these levels, such as smoking or chronic diseases, would therefore result in a decline in cell function. Of particular interest to our laboratory is the observation that vitamin C levels appear to decline in the elderly. This has been observed not only in human plasma, but also in plasma and tissues in rats, our model system. Why do vitamin C levels decline with age? The most straightforward answer is that vitamin C uptake declines with age. In other words, our bodies don't have the same capacity to absorb vitamin C, so vitamin C levels in the plasma and tissues become lower. This has been supported by a recent meta-analysis, which showed that the elderly had much lower plasma vitamin C levels than younger adults following a given dose of vitamin C. This suggests that vitamin C absorption in the gut declines with age. Vitamin C absorption is
Selenium is an essential trace element necessary to maintain good health. Laboratory animals reared in the absence of selenium show retarded growth, and farm animals raised on selenium-poor crops develop white muscle disease. Humans living in isolated regions with insufficient selenium in the food chain show susceptibility to cardiomyopathies. Pathologies reversed by nutritionally adequate levels of selenium are classified as selenium deficiency diseases. In modern societies there is sufficient selenium in the normal diet to prevent outright selenium deficiency disease. Nevertheless, accumulating evidence suggests that supplementing the diet with supranutritional levels of selenium has additional health benefits (see figure below). In laboratory animals, a high selenium diet results in a significant reduction in the frequency of several types of cancers. Selenium may also have cancer preventive activity in humans. An oft-cited clinical study published by Dr. Larry Clark in 1998 found that in patients who had
Thiamine (vitamin B1) is found in fortified breads, cereals, pasta, whole grains, lean meats, fish, dried beans, peas, and soybeans.
Fiber is neither digested nor absorbed in the small intestine but is fermented by bacteria in the colon. On a typical American diet, about 75% of ingested fiber is fermented. While there is no absolute requirement for dietary fiber, it is almost certainly needed for normal bowel function. Adequate fiber clearly prevents constipation, diverticular disease of the colon, and hemorrhoids. Many other physiologic effects have been attributed to fiber and consumption of diets high in fiber may prevent a variety of conditions including obesity, diabetes, gallstones, coronary artery disease, or colon cancer. Epidemiological studies show fairly clearly that diets high in fruits, vegetables and cereal grains are associated with decreased risk of developing these diseases.
Synthesized vitamins became widely available, and were increasingly added to a variety of foods as well as being formulated in tablets and capsules.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in Americans. Evidence from epidemiological and animal studies supports a relationship between diet and the risk of colorectal cancer. Case-control studies have shown that there is a reduced risk for colorectal cancer associated with higher intake of whole grains, including wheat, rice, oats, rye, and corn. In attempting to understand the mechanism responsible for the protective effect of wholegrains, most studies have concentrated on components isolated from whole grains. However, the inverse association of dietary fiber, which is abundant in bran, with colorectal cancer risk still remains somewhat equivocal. Besides dietary fiber, whole grains are also rich sources of a wide range of phytochemicals with probable anticarcinogenic properties. |

A
Protein Dietary Supplement. Only Better.
Immunocal is a bonded cysteine dietary supplement. What is bonded
cysteine, exactly? It's simply the name of
elements with unique
benefits, which are found in certain special proteins. Immunocal is a
protein supplement whose benefits reach far beyond nutrition, by virtue
of the high amount of bonded cysteine it contains. In fact, Immunocal
is considered a "nutraceutical" and is different from other protein
supplements in its ability to support the immune system.
